121Ethiopia.org has finished renovation and improvement of an orphanage in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
121Ethiopia.org has entered into a close partnership with project co-ordinator Gert Jensen from the ELSA Foundation, in charge of renovation of the Kechene Orphanage.
In 2008, 121Ethiopia completed:
The renovation of the Kechene Youth Care and Rehabilitation Centre has been finished and was handed over to the local administration in 2008. In addition to completing the most important projects of the school building and reading room, the guardhouse and kitchen have also now been turned into pleasant work stations.
The orphanage was founded in 1955 and is run by the local sub-city government in Addis Ababa. Kechene is home to approximately 200 young people, aged 0-22. 121Ethiopia chose to concentrate its relief work at Kechene because the orphanage was in a critical condition. The roofs and ceilings leaked, sanitary and kitchen facilities were insufficient, the children were packed together in small rooms, and there is a shortage of trained staff, among many other problems.

In May 2007, 121Ethiopia completed:
The renovation of the fence all around Kechene. The orphanage covers a fairly large area, and the fence around it was in a terrible state, and in some areas, completely missing. The fence is hugely important to protect the children from intruders.
The renovation of the building that houses the children between 10-14 years old. Now the house has renovated toilets and bathing facilities, new beds, personal closets for each child, and electricity.
The renovation of the small playground, which had been left unused for many years. At the same time, 121Ethiopia purchased activity toys for all ages, together with 3 computers for the classroom and 31 schoolbags for all the children aged 0-10 years old.
